There is a close intrinsic relationship between trauma and spirituality - this is the conclusion at which Dr. Peter A. Levine, founder of SOMATIC EXPERIENCING (SE), has arrived after closely and meticulously studying the nature of trauma over the past 50 years. In thousands of trauma-specific sessions he has experienced that, from his perspective, a divine energy enters the body as soon as the trauma is released. This often magical transformation manifests itself in many different ways. Much of the course revolves around this healing relationship and its transformative power, which often leads to a spiritual awakening.

“The magic of existence is tremendous.”
Raul Gustavo Aguirre, Argentinian Poet

Finding a well-grounded approach to various forms of spiritual states and processes is the precondition for an embodied spirituality anchored in the present moment - be it in ZEN, in awakening the power of Kundalini energy, in understanding the Eternal Now, in various other meditation practices, in a near-death experience or in carefully prepared and facilitated psychedelic experiments. Unstable inner states, which are often the result of severe trauma, do not provide a sufficiently sound foundation for spiritual encounters and journeys into these realms?

It is therefore extremely important to make sure that the person planning to participate in a meditation course or any other spiritually oriented event is resilient enough to do so. If they are not, i.e. if their nervous system is quickly irritated and hyperactivated, sufficient time must first be reserved for more self-regulation and thus resilience-building to make sure everyone involved in the experience is safe.

“Being held is the milk and honey of human kindness.”
Peter A. Levine

Feelings of connection, goodness, humility, kindness, patience, dignity, vitality and other existential virtues are usually missing in people who have suffered trauma. They must first be brought into the person’s embodied experience. By the trauma being resolved, the body-centered experience in the “Here and Now” creates the space for it. In most cases the person experiences a sudden change in the way they view the world, and suddenly feel connected to others, to nature and also to themselves in a way previously unknown or barely known to them. The archetype of being held plays a key role in this transformative phase. Held by others, by nature, indeed by the entire cosmos and not least by oneself. This is the experience we are supposed to have as embryos and babies in entering into our human lives and this world - and which is missing in histories of early trauma.

The prerequisite for participation in this late summer event in Weggis is the completion of the Beginners’ Year in the SE training cycle. Anyone who has not attended it at our institute is kindly asked to submit the pertinent confirmation with their registration.
