Sexual experiences during life can often be disappointing, and a source of unhappiness and trauma, including during our formative years. In this 2-day workshop Dr. Peter A. Levine will be joining hands with Diana Richardson, and together they will give an overview on how the past can be healed and transformed in the present, so that sexuality is not marked for the rest of our lives by the overwhelming or unhappy events of the past.

Sexual trauma leaves individuals freezing in situations where a non-traumatized individual might even feel some excitement and pleasure. Rather than being a last-ditch reaction to inescapable threat, freezing along with chronic shame, becomes a “default” response to a wide variety of situations in which one’s feelings are highly aroused. For example, the arousal of sex may turn unexpectedly from excitement to frigidity, revulsion, or avoidance. When people become “stuck” in these powerful emotional and physical reactions, they become lost, and their intimate relationships are greatly compromised.

In this class we will explore gentle ways to help individuals “renegotiate” these maladaptive reactions and create new, here-and-now, experiences in their bodies so that a healthy sexuality can be restored. Together, these two innovators will share their approaches to the sexual healing of individuals and couples with one clear goal: “How can the past be transformed in the present?”

On day 1 Dr. Peter A. Levine will show how as adults we can deal with trauma and challenging experiences in a way that is beneficial, and how trauma can be a portal to connecting with the vitality, which heals and integrates on fundamental energy levels.

On day 2, Diana Richardson will contribute her vast knowledge on how being more present, aware, and relaxed during the sexual exchange transforms it into a healing experience that establishes authenticity, strengthens the trust in our bodies and increases our capacity to love.
