We know the brain craves stimulation and the stimulation from the changing weight shifts on the Tuning Board that are accelerated and amplified add positive stimulation to brain and nervous system functioning. This is a good thing. Not only does it provide practice and skill for evaluating safety and threat but it also helps us in our continual reciprocal interaction with the internal, external and social environments.
Balance is an exquisite coordination of sensorimotor stimulation that includes proprioception, brainstem, cortex and vestibular structures and functions. Information about where our bodies are in space and how we are managing being vertical in gravity is primary to our sense of being and relationship to ourselves and others. We will use the practice of the Tuning Board to restore balance and neuroceptive confidence to our brain and nervous system.
It does so through fine adjustments to changes in the field of gravity and our vertical posture orientation from sensing the environment and others regarding moving towards or away in responding and interacting for safety, survival and social joining.
Neuroception is a term Stephen Porges originated to describe the unconscious neural process by which we evaluate safety, the environment and socialization based on facial expressions, movements (approach/avoid), sounds and vocalizations. Just as in neuroception, where the nervous system is unconsciously assessing for moment-to-moment changes in the social interactions and the social field, our nervous system is also unconsciously influencing the adjusting of our postures. The stimulation from the changing weight shifts on the Tuning Board that are accelerated and amplified add positive stimulation to brain and nervous system functioning. This is a good thing. Such a process necessitates a nervous system that is resilient and responsive, one that is capable of making instantaneous evaluations of microsensing and micromovements for safety or defense.
Vertigo and dizziness means the vestibular system is not functioning optimally. Our ability to find balance neurologically and functionally are compromised and so too is our neuroceptive capability. It is not surprising that when we experience vertigo or dizziness as the world moves around us when we are still can be quite unsettling. The communication between the stability of the inner ear and the perception of uncontrolled movement in space can make us stop and wonder what is happening in an uncomfortable way.
