A developmental approach to sensory pathways to healing from trauma recognizes that sensory systems emerge sequentially across development, with the vestibular and touch systems coming online first and providing the foundation for later sensory, emotional, cognitive, and social functioning. Traumatic experiences can disrupt the integration of these foundational sensory systems, contributing to difficulties with arousal regulation, body awareness, emotion regulation, and interpersonal connection. By targeting sensory pathways in a developmentally informed manner, interventions can help restore neural integration, strengthen self-regulation, and promote restoration of the self after trauma

Ruth Lanius, MD, Ph.D., Professor of Psychiatry is the director of the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) research unit at the University of Western Ontario.
